Whereas before the player fought against diabolical forces that wished to destroy humanity, in the newly launched DLC levels for Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land, this is reversed as the player now has to end the world. In the six new levels released today, entitled ‘Kaul’s Diary’, the player instead controls the villainous cult leader from the original game, Docktor Kaul. In a series of encounters set before the events of ‘The Wasted Land’ the player controls Kaul and his minions as they attempt to put his genocidal vision into action. To play the new levels, players need a copy of the original game and simply then select ‘Extra Levels’ and purchase Kaul’s Diary there. The DLC costs $2.99/£1.79/€2.39 from the App Store and more platforms are expected to follow soon.
The game’s designer, Tomas Rawlings, says, “While it is fun fighting zombies, we figured it would also be fun controlling zombies. What is more fun that shooting at Leng Spiders is controlling Leng Spiders and in Kaul’s Diary, that is exactly what you get to do. Kaul’s Diary is in some respects a return to the game design ideas that originally brought me into contact with Chaosium (the publishers of the paper version of Call of Cthulhu) for whom I wrote a monograph entitled ‘The Dark Mirror’ about just this theme: being the baddies!”
If you are new to this cult title, it is a turn-based strategy RPG inspired by the works of pulp horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. The game was developed by indie developer Red Wasp Design in co-operation with Chaosium, the publishers of the paper role-playing game, Call of Cthulhu. The video game features nine 3D levels set in the trenches of World War One. In ‘The Wasted Land’ the player uses their team of investigators to uncover a deadly inhuman conspiracy underlying the Great War. As the game progresses, the player can build up the skills, weapons and equipment of their team. Key to the game is Sanity; the investigators must guard their minds against the myriad horrors that threaten to send them into the mouth of madness. Barbed wire, mustard gas and machines guns will prove to be the least dangerous thing the investigators will encounter as they venture out into No-man’s Land to solve the mystery of the Wasted Land.
