Review of The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons
Posted on August 10, 2023 by Flames
The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons is a 127-page, system-agnostic, descriptive field guide to dragons. Written by Sindri Suncatcher, a kender wizard familiar to Dragonlance fans, the narrative guide provides an overview of dragon anatomy, society, lairs, hoards, combat, magic, etiquette, and language. Notes in the margins flesh out Sindri’s take on ten different types of dragons arranged by color with illustrations on anatomy and lairs. Dragonkind is also explored and includes faerie dragons, wyverns, draconians, dragonborn, kobolds, etc. with a section on how to ride dragons and suggested dragon-related classes.
Geared for younger readers, the font and many of the art pieces are larger than what you’d find in a typical Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition supplement and does not contain any rules. The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons is a hardcover book for younger dragon enthusiasts who want to read and enjoy them. Campaign designers can extract setting and worldbuilding information from the illustrated book, but will need to reference rules in other supplements. The notes on dragon etiquette, language, and dragon-riding are especially useful should your party wish to interact with a dragon.
Collectors should also note that The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons is an expanded, hardcover compendium that draws select content from A Practical Guide to Dragons, A Practical Guide to Dragon Riding, and A Practical Guide to Dragon Magic. Credited writers are Susan J Morris, Lisa Trutkoff Trumbauer, and James Wyatt. Cover art was illustrated by Clint Cearley.
The list price for The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons is $39.95 and debuts August 15, 2023 wherever books are sold.
